Frequently Asked Questions

How much does it cost and how do I pay?

The first two sessions are £8 each, and then payments become monthly and are on a sliding scale based on income. We accept payment ahead of sessions via PayPal or bank transfer. .

What do i need to bring with me?

To participate in the sessions, you’ll need to bring your own equipment, including:

  • A helmet

  • Knee pads

  • Elbow pads

  • Wrist guards

  • Quad skates (skates with 2x2 wheels, as opposed to roller blades)

We also advise that you wear comfortable sportswear, and bring a water bottle (there’s a water fountain outside of the hall for refilling).

Can I borrow kit?

We have a limited selection of equipment available to borrow. Please specify if you need to borrow things when you fill in the sign-up form. This will be loaned out on a first come, first served basis.

Do I need a mouthguard?

Not to start with. Only those who are contact approved need mouthguards – we will let you know when to purchase one as the sessions go on.

where can i buy my own kit?

Many online skate shops cater to roller derby. We recommend checking out our sponsor Double Threat Skates, which also has a physical shop in King’s Cross.

Where and when do sessions take place?

All of our Fundamentals training sessions take place at Bridge Park Community Leisure Centre on Sundays from 11.30am - 1.30pm.

Does it matter if I can't make every session, or if I can't make the first session?

You’ll need to attend at least one of the first two sessions for safety reasons. If an intake is oversubscribed, those who attended the first session will be prioritised and others will need to wait until our next intake to join.

For the rest of the training programme, we recommend that you miss as few sessions as possible to progress with the rest of the group. However, we appreciate that life sometimes gets in the way, so don’t sweat it if you need to skip a couple of sessions.

Do i need to be able to skate already?

No! Our sessions cater to a large range of skating abilities, so whether this will be your first time on skates or you’ve been skating for years, we’ll teach you everything you need to know to be able to play roller derby.

I’m AMAB non-binary/a trans man and I don’t feel comfortable joining a mens roller derby team - can i skate with you?

You are very welcome to join our Fundamentals programme. London Roller Derby follows the WFTDA (Women’s Flat Track Derby Association) gender policy, which allows women (including transgender and intersex women), non-binary and gender expansive people (including those assigned male at birth) to participate in main league training as skaters. However, all genders are welcome to join us as roller derby officials (e.g.: referees and non-skating officials).

I love the sport but I’m physically unable to skate for various reasons. Is there a way to get involved without skating?

Yes! If you’d like to get involved with roller derby off-skates, you can learn how to be a non-skating official to help out at games and scrimmages. It’s a fun way to feel part of the team without having to skate. Additionally, you can also get involved in the running of the league – an extra hand is always appreciated!

I’m totally out of shape – does it matter?

No! People generally build up their fitness levels while learning to skate, and many of our skaters start cross-training outside of the sessions to condition their skating muscles and improve their stamina.

Do you fall over a lot?

Yes, but we get back up again!
